Adding families to your project

Learn how to download Blocks families and place them in your Revit project

Written by Blocks

You can download families from our library using the Blocks plugin or directly from blocksrvt.com.

How to place a family through the plugin

On Revit’s Add-ins tab, click “Blocks” to open the plugin. Then sign in to your account and select your profile to access the library:

If you do not have the Blocks plugin installed yet, see How to download the Blocks plugin and access our library.”

In the plugin, search for the family you want and click it once to start the download. A dialog box may appear while the family is being upgraded to your Revit version:

Once the download is complete, the family will be attached to your cursor. Move it to the desired location and click again to place it in the project:

Note: pressing Esc only cancels the placement. The family will remain loaded in the project and can be placed again at any time using Revit’s Component (CM) command.

Some families require a specific host. For example, certain lighting families can only be placed on a ceiling.

If the family is placed on the wrong plane

To change the placement plane, follow these steps:

  1. Click the family in the plugin to start the download;

  2. When it appears on your cursor, select the desired placement option in the Revit Options Bar (Modify → Place Component):

    • Place on Face: places the family on a compatible face in the model, such as a wall, floor, or ceiling.

    • Place on Work Plane: places the family on a work plane that has already been defined in the project.

  3. Click the desired location to place the family.

When the download does not complete

If the family is not available for placement after you click it in the plugin, see Why can’t I download a family to insert it into my project? for common causes and troubleshooting steps.

How to place a family from the website

If you cannot use the Blocks plugin, you can also download families directly from the website:

  1. Go to blocksrvt.com and sign in to your account;

  2. Search for the family you want and click “Download”;

  3. Click “Download” again to start the download;

  4. Once the file has finished downloading, drag it directly into your open project in Revit. Press CM, the shortcut for Component, to load the family onto your cursor, then click the desired location to place it in the project.
